English as an Additional Language (EAL) Training Workshops (formerly ESL)

The Graduate Research School have organized six workshops (x 3 hours) for higher degree by research students whose first language is not English. The workshops run on both Mt Lawley campus and Joondalup campus.

Not only do these workshops help with English grammar and academic writing, but they also provide excellent networking opportunities that are greatly appreciated (and unexpected) by the students. Last semester even students with an IELTS score above 8.0 said they benefitted enormously from attending the workshops. Students who attended the workshops last semester can attend again this semester if they wish.

Objectives:
• Each workshop covers aspects of both grammar and skills needed for postgraduate study
• Each topic of grammar is discussed briefly at a basic level then in detail at an advanced level, as well as how this grammar is used in academic writing.
• Grammar topics include verb tenses, uncountable nouns, articles, modals, prepositions, modifiers, punctuation
• Skills topics include skim reading, critical reading, critical thinking, paraphrasing, synthesis of information, paragraphing, editing, proof reading, parallelism
• The topics are based on many years of experience in supporting and guiding international students

Workshops are presented mainly by Ann Beveridge (qualifications in Education, ESL and adult learning, Archeology) and Dr Jo McFarlane (qualifications in Agriculture).
