Research Data Management Seeding the Commons Project
Project overview
ECU has received funding from the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) to promote ECU research and improve the discovery and re-use of our research data by outside researchers and potential partners. It will also help to raise awareness of research data management and data management planning within ECU. ANDS is supported by the Australian Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and the Education Investment Fund (EIF). The ANDS funding is for a Seeding the Commons project enabling ECU to review the data management policy framework and contribute details of research datasets and data collections to Research Data Australia. Researchers from many Australian research organisations have already contributed information about 1,400 research data collections to Research Data Australia.ECU project details
The ANDS Seeding the Commons project will run for eight months commencing in February 2011 and is being managed by the Library and sponsored by the Office of Research and Innovation. This project has the following key aims:
- To develop university wide data management policies and procedures
- To develop and deliver internal training programs and resources for research data management
- Identify at least twelve strategically important research data collections at Edith Cowan University associated with publicly funded research and published material
- Ensure that metadata about these collections is made available to the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC)
Benefits of the project
- The development of long term policies for research data management
- Increased understanding around data management practices across the university and a training package to support this
- Improved support for researchers and research students around management of research
- Improved data through training and increased awareness of data management requirements
- Identification of strategically important research data collections
- Discovery and re-use of research data collections by outside researchers via Australian Research Data Commons
- ECU will become better placed to improve the discovery and re-use of research data collection
Get involved
The project team are very keen to speak to researchers about their research datasets. If you have research data and you would like to speak to someone about this project please contact Julia Gross or Constance Wiebrands.
