ECU celebrates research success

ECU has this week acknowledged some of the recent success of the many outstanding researchers at the University.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Kerry Cox, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor John Finlay-Jones presided over the celebration event, which recognised outstanding achievement in research from a variety of fields - from health to education, and finance to security.

Researchers were acknowledged for their successes in the following areas:
• ECU Industry Collaboration Grant Winners
• ECU Early Career Grant Winners 2009
• ARC Linkage Grant Winners
• Australian Competitive Grant Winners
• Top ECU Researchers in each School
• Top Research Activity Index Performers for 2008

A total of 75 awards were handed out, illustrating the depth of research talent that exists at ECU.

Professor Ralph Martins was named Top ECU Researcher for the second year in a row, for his research into Alzheimer’s disease.

Professor Cox said that around the world, research is an important distinguishing feature of universities in comparison to other educational institutions and, as such, is a major priority for ECU.

“It is pleasing to see how quickly excellent research is developing at ECU and also to see the success of both well-known, experienced researchers as well as emerging stars still at an early stage of their careers,” he said.

Professor Finlay-Jones thanked all in the Office of Research and Innovation for the support they provide to researchers at ECU, particularly for their work on the Research Activity Index.
