Research Activity Index
Please note that applications for Research Activity Index (RAI) 2007 have closed and the guidelines for the 2008 collection will be available late December 2008.

The Research Activity Index (RAI) is an internal scheme for rewarding the performance of ECU researchers under the HERDC specifications.

The Department of Education Science and Training uses data collected under the HERDC collection, along with data from the Higher Education Student Collection, for determining allocations to universities under the Research Training Scheme, the Institutional Grants Scheme, the Research Infrastructure Block Grants Scheme, and the Australian Postgraduate Awards and Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships Scheme.

Under the RAI staff and students can claim points for: external research income; publications (books, book chapters, journals and conference proceedings); and supervision of Masters by Research and PhD students (HDR completions). Points are awarded:

Research Income 0.02 points per dollar
Book: 1000 points
Book Chapter 200 Points
Article in High-impact Journal 400 Points
Article in Non-high-impact Journal 200 Points
Conference Publication 100 Points
HDR Completion - PhD 800 Points
HDR Completion - Masters by Research 400 Points

A journal will be defined as having a high impact if it is listed in either of two databases in the ISI Web of Knowledge:

Journals can be searched in either database. To search in Journal Citation Reports either the Science or Social Science edition must be chosen. The actual impact factor shown in these databases does not impace upon the RAI.

Funds provided under the RAI scheme will be placed in the recipient's RAI Project on Finance. The funds are not classified as personal income. All expenditure of RAI funds must relate to research. Any equipment purchased remains the property of the University. Expenditure is tightly controlled through faculties and schools.

A maximum payment of $40,000 will be provided to an individual in any round. In addition, the following are the maximum allocations that will be provided for research income:

Research Income Max Allocation
$0-1m $20,000
$1-3m $30,000
$3+m $40,000
